Although they are two different cities, many people tend to group them in the same category, probably because they're both on Lake Minnetonka, with great real estate, and lots to do. Minnetonka tends to be the place to hang out on a warm summer day for many residents in the Minneapolis area, so if you like to stay busy, then this neighborhood is perfect for you.
On the other hand, Excelsior tends to be a little bit quieter, but with many of the amenities that Minnetonka has to offer. For example, Maynard's (for those of you that haven't heard of it) is one of the busiest restaurants in Twin Cities. Sit outside by the lake or pull your boat up to the dock. After you're done with dinner, swing down the street to Adele's and grab yourself some of the best custard on this side of the Mississippi! The Minnetonka MN school district prides itself on being one of the biggest and best public-school programs in Minnesota. In 2020 they were ranked the #1 public school district in Minnesota by niche.com. As of the 2019-2020 school year, the school district has over 11,000 students enrolled in grades K-12 spread amongst their six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Since your kids will be potentially be attending school within this district, you might want to know that 99% of parents who have current students within the Minnetonka school district rate the education provided as good or excellent. To go off of that, 94% of parents say that their community receives good value from their investment into the public-school program.
In 2019, the high school's average ACT score was 27.7, and if academics weren't enough for you, in 2019, the school also recognized the NAMM for their outstanding commitment to music. They pride themselves in offering high-quality childcare programs for your children. During the school year, they offer programs extending from ages three to five, and four through fifth grade in the summer. Your children will practice a multitude of skills, including music, arts and crafts, games, cooking, outdoor playtime, computers, and much more. The Explorers Club currently has locations in Deep Haven, Clear Springs, Excelsior, Minnetonka, Groveland, Minnewashta, and Scenic Heights. We recommend you take a look for yourself, and ultimately, it's up to you to decide what best fits you and your child.
Minnetonka has plenty of great options for childcare and after school programs. While ultimately, it is up to you to decide what to do with your children, we have heard some good things through the grapevine about childcare in Minnetonka. KinderCare is one of the childcare facilities that is getting a lot of buzz from parents in the area who currently have their children enrolled here. Said to be run well and provide excellent care for their kids, this is an option you should look into. New Horizon also has a facility in Minnetonka, and their brand has been tried and true for many years in the business. Of course, there are many options you should explore when thinking about private child care. The Minnetonka library is part of the Hennepin County Library group. Located right near your new home on Library Lane, it is a great place to lay your hat, relax with a book, meet with friends, join a reading club or bring your kids to a place they can also learn without the battle of screentime - even though there are library computers to use. The Minnetonka Library is long-standing as it opened in its first free-standing location in 1968 in a residential neighborhood near Minnetonka High School. It was renovated in 2014 to what you see today.

If you've heard of the city of Minnetonka, then you've most certainly heard of the famous Lake Minnetonka. Lake Minnetonka is Minnesota's 10th largest lake (most abundant in the Twin Cities) with over 14,000 acres of water. That means a lot of areas to fish (over 14 different species), and a lot of space to cruise around on your boat. It's commonly rumored around the lake that comes summertime; Lake Minnetonka is "the place to be."
Fun Fact: It's rumored that the Rolling Stones hit song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was inspired by Lake Minnetonka when only 283 people showed up to hear the playback in 1964 at Big Reggie's Danceland in Excelsior.
There are several restaurants on the lake which you can pull your boat up to and grab a bite to eat, such as Maynard's and enjoy as you cruise the lake and gawk at the fantastic real estate on the lake. During the 4th of July, Lake Minnetonka has one of the biggest celebrations around, and many take to the water to hang out at Big Island or watch the fireworks from the water. Lake Minnetonka is also home to The Lake Minnetonka Yacht Club, founded in 1882, and is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States.
Lake Minnetonka has been named "the most famous lake of the Northwest." And on this lake lies the Minnehaha Steamboat. This steamboat charter has been at the turn of the 20th century and has been a staple on Lake Minnetonka ever since. The charter sails out of Excelsior and Wayzata, Minnesota, every single weekend from the beginning of May through early to mid-October. They provide 10,000 passengers every single year with a leisure tour of this great lake in our backyard. The base fee to enjoy this 90-minute ride is $600 for 25 of your closest friends. If you're well-liked by those around you, they offer another charter that carries 90 passengers for $1250. Make sure to book your tour around the lake soon because they sell out by the end of the summer almost every year!

Not to mention that all of this action leads you directly to the lake where you can set up a picnic blanket in the grassy area, play a game of whiffle ball, or walk the shore of the beach. The bay is always busy commotion from the lake, so if you like to hear the buzz of Lake Minnetonka, this place is perfect for you. They’re also said to have a great casual place to grab a happy hour drink or grab a bite to eat with your beer. Copperwing Distillery is another great place to grab some drinks. Many have said that their uniquely crafted cocktails are reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is perfect if you’re looking to sit down for a while.
